Squash Butternut is a winter squash vegetable. It is one of the nutritious vegetable. It will grow in any climate. Squash Butternut vegetable is a vine plant and can climb easily. Its growth is vigorous under normal fertilization and yield also good.
Growing Butternut at home
Squash butternut can be grown easily at home and it needs minimal care .butternut squash seedlings are growing though seeds. Chose a larger grow bag or pot of size at least 12×12 inches height x breadth. Make a good potting mix using garden soil, cocopeat , cow dung powder or vermi compost in the ratio of 1:1:1. You can add one handful bone meal powder and neem cake powder. This potting soil is suitable for growing all kind of vegetables in grow bag or pots.
Butternut squash seedling can be grown either in seedling trays or directly in grow bags and pots. If you are growing seedling in trays you need to transplant them after getting 3-4 leaves. Transplant carefully evening time or keep under shade if its too sunny. Fertilizer the plant with cow dung powder or npk 19:19:19 every 10 days for better yield and growth.
Butter nut squash vines will develop in a week time and we need to provide trellis to climb them on. You can make trellis using sticks and poles or you can use trellis netting / plant supporting nets, that is available in small sizes. 3×1.5 meter plant support net will be enough for home gardeners as it can be accommodated 5-6 butter nut squash plants.
Once started flowering, its better to spray 5 gram of NPK 19:19:19 or 5 ml of BIO NPK in 1 liter water all over the plant for better fruiting. These foliar spraying should be done early morning or late evening for better result.
