Description
This variety was developed by IARI, New Delhi. It provides high
yield (250–300 t/ha/year) of green matter under irrigated condition. It contains 25% and
12% more protein and sugar respectively than common napier grass. It is less fibrous, juicy
and palatable. It is susceptible to Helminthosporium sp
Green fodder of Pusa Giant Napier grass (Pen-nisetum purpureum) had crude protein 7.94, ether extract 2.50, crude fibre 33.45, N-free extract 42.00, ash 14.11, Ca 0.41, P 0.19 and oxalic acid 1.03% in dry matter (DM). The grass at preflowering stage was palatable to Hariana bulls 2 years old; average daily intake was 2.12 kg DM per 100 kg bodyweight. Percentage digestibilities were of DM 53, crude protein 59, ether extract 61, crude fibre 54, N-free extract 52, and total carbohydrates 53. Calculated feeding value was digestible crude protein 4.68, total digestible nutrients 47.83 and starch equivalent 31.24%.
