The variety was developed by PAU, Ludhiana from cross between Bajra selection-1 × N-3 (Napier) and released for cultivation in Punjab.
PBN83 is a sterile hybrid between the Pennisetum typhoides line IP2656 and the P. purpureum line N3. It is a late, fast growing, multicut fodder variety with a shorter winter dormancy and greater winter tolerance than NB21, which it has outyielded.
